The Lighthouse is a thematic, player-driven story set in the unexplored waters surrounding the eponymous building.
Players take on the roles of the enigmatic Keepers, daring Explorers, or their conspicuous Patrons. Each has their own agendas and paths to glory.
Players tell Stories of incredible feats and build their Reputation.
The primary mechanic in the game is a simple exploration puzzle to solve. The simple mechanics exist as a platform for you to Negotiate, Barter, Co-operate, Build Alliances and more.
There are no 'war maps' or 'units on a board' conflict.
The explorer teams are based on mid-late 19th-century exploration societies. These teams journey into the waters surrounding The Lighthouse. They are:
Société de Géographie
Royal Geographical Society
The American Geographical Society
The Society of Extraordinary Adventurers
Each Exploration Society has 3x 'Sub-teams' of 3 players each. These sub-teams are the Societies experts in Open Ocean, Polar, and Deep Sea exploration. Each sub-team will be exploring and telling a different story throughout the day.
The Patrons are an eclectic collection of figures drawn to The Lighthouse for reasons as varied and unpredictable as the sea itself. While some chase legends, others pursue knowledge, seek profit, or are simply here for a good time.
What unites them is a deep interest in the unfolding events around— and a desire to shape the course of those events as they need.
There are 5 patron teams in the game, each with 2 players. These are sold as generic 'Patron' teams, with a questionnaire sent out to cast those teams after ticket sales.
There are always Six Keepers. No more, no less.
We must acknowledge that many of the themes within The Lighthouse hail from the era of colonisation and are, for the most part, Euro-centric. Know that this game, its designer, and its game-day Facilitators are in no way celebrating the colonisation of lands nor the effects that colonisation has had on First Nations peoples anywhere in the world. That is not at all what we’re about. If you are about colonialism, you are not welcome.
Sydney Megagamers always relies on players embracing our social contract which acknowledges that "while tensions and conflicts exist between factions in our fictional world, those more focused and personal anti-social behaviours (like racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and any other kind of discrimination) do not exist in this game."
